Literacy at First Steps Together

ACTIVE Values (1).png

At First Steps Together, we are dedicated to nurturing a love for literacy and promoting strong reading and writing skills across the curriculum. We believe that literacy is a fundamental skill that empowers our students to communicate effectively, think critically, and succeed in all areas of their education and future.

We recognise many of our students join First Steps Together schools with gaps in their literacy knowledge and understanding. To support our students' literacy development, we utilise the highly regarded Read Write Inc. program for phonics catch-up and improvement. Read Write Inc. is a comprehensive phonics program designed to systematically teach children the skills needed to read fluently and confidently. Through engaging and interactive lessons, our students develop their phonetic knowledge, decoding skills, and reading comprehension abilities.

We understand that literacy is not confined to English lessons alone. It is integrated into all aspects of our curriculum, enabling our students to apply their reading and writing skills across different subjects. Whether it's analysing texts in science, writing persuasive arguments in humanities, leading a coaching activity in PE or exploring literature in English, our students are immersed in a literacy-rich environment that enhances their understanding and engagement with the curriculum.

Our experienced teachers are trained to deliver high-quality literacy instruction and create a supportive learning environment that fosters a love for reading and writing. We encourage independent reading, provide a wide range of age-appropriate texts, and celebrate literary achievements through book clubs, author visits, and themed events.

We also recognise the importance of parental involvement in supporting literacy development. We actively engage with parents and provide guidance on how to support their child's reading at home. We believe that a strong partnership between school and home enhances a student's literacy journey.

At First Steps Together, we are committed to empowering our students with the literacy skills they need to succeed academically and beyond. Through the use of Read Write Inc. for phonics catch-up and improvement, a literacy-infused curriculum, and a supportive learning community, we strive to foster a lifelong love for reading and writing in every student.
